Let it snow...

Ever since we photographed their wedding last March, Steph and Chris have become some of our dearest friends. Randy and I threw around ideas of shooting their After Session at the beach in April but when the snow hit this afternoon I KNEW that I had to call them. It rarely ever snows in our area of Tennessee and it never stays on the ground for more than a day. Steph, who disliked anything wedding related, shocked me by yelling "Awesome!" and an hour later we were scaling a fence for their shoot.

Steph said the weather reminded her of their first date because it was freezing cold and she had to snuggle into Chris for warmth, like this...

"Here Chris, hold my camera while I climb over."
"Pictures? Okay!"
"Noooooooooooo!"
And there you have it, folks. Snowy Kate straddling a fence.

Holga Photography

A few years ago, I was searching for a fun photography class to attend and the majority of offerings had titles like "Beginning Digital Photography" or "Learning Your Camera". There was one class that I found which had the title: "Holga and Alternative Processing". This tiny plastic camera taught me to embrace the unexpected and reignited my passion for film. It also helped me to fall in love with landscape and nature photography, which I previously had little interest in pursuing. This year we'll be taking my Holgas on our travels (ahhh fun with airport security) so there will be lots of 120 film posts in the future!

When Lanna and I chatted about their engagement session, she was understandably worried about the schizophrenic weather that Tennessee has been having lately. Thankfully we found an afternoon that was rain-free! I love how monotone and "moody" the landscape is in winter.

Elizabeth and Jason opted for a "day after" session because of the rain and lack of time for portraits when they got married. I recommend these sessions to clients because there is so much rushing and stress that goes into the wedding day. It's so much fun to get dressed up again and the vibe of these sessions are completely relaxed.

Christi is a rock star. I kid you not, this woman is past 30 weeks and still shimmied up on an air conditioning vent for the shot I wanted. Then again, I shouldn't be surprised. I met Christi at Zumba class, where she was literally moonwalking across the floor!
One image will be used as the header of my new site, under the maternity section. Votes?

You'd think shooting a session around noon would be a VERY bad idea but I adore hunting for great light. The entire session was shot sans flash, strobe, video light...nada. Just the "natty light" that I love so much!

I fell in love with Casey and Diane right away. Scratch that, our entire studio fell in love with them. These two are so genuine and rarely spend a minute without laughter. Wedding on The Farm - Nashville, TN

I'd love to say that Elizabeth and Jason had a "perfect" wedding but realistically it was QUITE the day! Multiple people (including me) got stuck in the mud and had to be towed out, the garden ceremony was rained out and everyone had to retreat to the barn (and a gorgeous barn it was at The Farm @ Kingston Springs), a groomsman passed out during the ceremony and a transformer blew in Kingston Springs leaving everyone in the dark for quite a while. But you know the amazing thing about this couple? When I left at the end of the night they were still laughing/dancing/singing with their friends and family...celebrating their union regardless of the wedding glitches. It made my heart happy.

This was my favorite send-off that I've EVER seen at a wedding. The couple and guests lit sky lanterns which twinkled like stars when they lifted off. GORGEOUS!

I also CANNOT say enough wonderful things about Courtney and her team from A Magical Affair. They were soaked from running chairs in from the rain, they lit candle after candle when the power went out and scrambled to set up the generators...and those are just a *few* things that kept them busy. Courtney, you and your team are rock stars.

While I was in Massachusetts, I had someone ask me mid-session what was the hardest thing for me to shoot. The answer is by far...my own children! Little Man and Baby Girl aren't entertained by my goofy dances and attention-grabbing noises anymore but thankfully it still works on my smallest clients. These sweethearts reminded me exactly why we want three kids. S, M & T are their own little family unit and the combined energy is infectious!

New Orleans destination wedding

Randy and I met Ashley & Tony last September when we were out in Montana for a wedding. When it came time to plan their wedding they decided to fly us out to shoot and officiate their small destination wedding. Where do a boy from South Africa and a girl from Chicago get married...home of the never-ending celebration, New Orleans of course! Tony proposed to Ashley a few months ago at Antoine's and the couple wanted to have a small ceremony and reception in the area where they got engaged. Wandering a city + wedding couple = visual scavenger hunt. We had such a great time!

Nothing says The Big Easy like a first dance by a N.O. style jazz band. They played a fantastic version of "You Are My Sunshine" and dedicated the song to the new Mr. & Mrs. =)

This wedding...*blissful sigh*...you can't help but love these two. Steph originally just wanted to go to the courthouse to get married. She voiced many times that she wasn't into most things wedding related and preferred to be married without all of the stress. In the few months after their engagement, Steph & Chris (and their wonderful coordinator Lori) created a laid back wedding that was simple, pure, romantic and had such wonderful elements of their personality. I already posted a few images but I can't help but post more. Such an amazing day!

Destination Wedding Photography - Stephanie & Jason

On Thursday, Anna (my beautiful second shooter) and I traveled down to Florida for Stephanie & Jason's destination wedding. Between Rosemary Beach and Panama City Beach, there is a little home called Anna's Veranda which was the PERFECT place to host a beach wedding.
Robyn with Mix Mingle GLOW event design & planning did a fantastic job keeping the day running smoothly. I usually don't go out of my way to talk about different coordinators but Robyn had a LOT of glitches thrown her way and handled it all with grace and calmness (and kept a smile on her face the entire time). The bride knew almost nothing of what happened...which is the mark of a wonderful wedding coordinator! Anna and I loved working with her.
I put together a few images for a slideshow (minus the reception which I have yet to dive into) because I know Stephanie is dying to see some images from her gorgeous weekend.

Ahhhh! Wedding season is finally here!
Steph and Chris would have been perfectly content getting married at the courthouse but opted for a small, intimate ceremony in the woods...surrounded by their closest friends. It was a beautiful day of music and laughter.

I absolutely love personal touches to weddings. Maggie dress + favorite chucks = Steph style.

Their ceremony was in an adorable lodge at Cedars of Lebanon State Park.

After the ceremony, we took a short detour on the way to the reception for a couple's session.

Engagement Photography - Franklin, TN

During our initial wedding meeting, Bonnie & Eric approached me with an unusual request. Bonnie has actually been swimming for years as a mermaid and they wanted to incorporate that into part of their engagement session. I'm always up for a new challenge! We shot most of the session just outside of Franklin, in Leipers Fork. These two are so, so sweet together.

E & B, thanks so much for trusting me...even when it meant climbing inside a rusty drainpipe. ;) Can't wait for your fairytale wedding!

Family Life Project

Every year I try to do something out of the ordinary for my business, to push myself to go beyond what I know and am comfortable with. Last year was diving into workshops and falling in love with my Holga. For 2009 I started a year-long project revolving around one family. Every few months I do sessions for portrait clients, seeing their kids grow by leaps and bounds for each sitting, and I wanted to try following a family every month (if not multiple times a month) to truly experience what their world is like. M & G were kind enough to allow me into their lives this year. Both are amazing parents with an unusual family story. Their beautiful daughter is 3, twin sons aren't quite 2 yet and they wanted to add another child to their family. M had to explain to her daughter, when she said "I want two sisters!", that babies usually didn't come in sets of two. But God had other plans and they were blessed with ANOTHER set of twins. I've been shooting images at their home, doctor appointments, etc for the past two months and getting to know them better. I got a call yesterday that M was in labor, so I tossed my equipment together and ran to the hospital. What an experience! The doctors allowed me into the operating room for her c-section so I was able to capture the first moments of their new son AND daughter!

Congrats M & G! I'll be posting more from this family later in the year. I can't wait to see how their family changes through 2009!

What they love, places that mean something to them, etc. Stephanie and Jason chose The Factory because it was the location of Jason's proposal (all together now....awwwwww!) and then Jason's son joined us for part of the session.

I would not be where I am without my loving family and friends. I met with Erica & Jeremy yesterday before the Superbowl (Jeremy INSISTED that we didn't let the time run over. Ha!) for a quick maternity session. Aren't they so sweet together?

While on Christmas vacation, R and I met up with Emily & Jon (who run Beaty Photography) for a bite to eat and some shop talk. A few days later we wandered all over Fort Smith to shoot a couple's session for them and had a fantastic time.

R and I were a strange sight as I hung off of a rail and he wrapped around my waist to keep me from falling. lol

I actually stalked her one day while both of our kids were playing at the Discovery Center. I loved how she was shooting her son (the interaction, angles, etc) and asked her about helping me this season. I've had so much fun working with her and getting to know her family! Brinn asked me to do a fall session and here's just a few images from my time with them....

Balance

As most photographers can tell you, learning to balance life and work (especially with holiday deadlines looming) can be a tough thing. In an effort to simplify my days, and to spend more time with the kiddos, I scheduled most of my fall sessions in a 2-day block. This Sunday I shot 21 mini-sessions for different families and as a result I will be able to spend most upcoming weekends with my family. And that sounds like a wonderful balance to me....

I know the blog title is lyrics from a Christmas song but, for me, fall really is the most wonderful time of the year. Stacy & Reid tied the knot this Saturday on a BEAUTIFUL October evening at Lake Cumberland State Park. I love that these two humored me and hiked a little way into the woods so we could catch the full fall colors.

This weekend I made the long trip to Wisconsin to capture Stephanie & Travis' wedding. The airline managed to lose my luggage on the way there (minus the camera equipment, which I always carry on) but a girl can always use a reason to shop, right? =) The wedding was well worth the luggage problem though. I loved the little moments that Steph and Travis shared.....

How to cure yourself of a fear of heights:
a) Go to therapy, lots of therapy
b) Read self-help books and work around your issues
c) Throw yourself out of a perfectly good airplane

Most "normal" people would choose the first two options. Right?
My past clients are probably well aware of my fear of heights. I jump and climb on things like a monkey to get the shots that I want but only at the expense of a rapid heart rate, severe anxiety and shaking limbs. There is no real reason why I should be terrified of heights. I've never fallen from anything and there are no traumatic experiences that caused my neuroses. So as one of my goals for this year I decided to deal with my fears the old fashioned way....face them head on. Thank you to the crew at Adventure Skydiving Center in Clarksville!!!!

As a side note:
Dear mom, sorry about the use of "Oh sh*t! Oh my God!" before I went out of the plane. I love you and hope you don't disown me. =)

Jessica and Ben are on Santa's "good" list this year. Not only did they give me creative freedom and suggest a REALLY fun location for their shoot but they also cooked macaroni n' cheese for me. You heard right. My love of that clog-your-arteries-horribly-bad-for-you food has bled into work and now people are enabling my addiction. My job freakin' rocks.

The images from the state fair are my favorite. I have so many pictures of them snuggling, laughing and just having fun together. =)

Workshop preview

Earlier this year I flew to Chicago to meet up with some friends and to focus on improving our photography. We had so much fun that the group decided to have another get-together this fall, where we included more photographers, and I offered to host it in Nashville. I'll be honest, I'm dragging today because we were everywhere this weekend. The ladies had 6 shoots in about 48-hours, plus some fabulous "girly" time and a night out on the town. What a fantastic time!!!

Little Miracle

I had planned write a massive post about my wonderful friend and how thrilled I am on the arrival of this little pumpkin but I'm pretty weepy today (in a good way). The mom would rather I not post personal information but little did she know that I would be her stalker! In a positive way....not the "I see you through your window" type. So I'll keep it simple and void of names:

Little M, what a blessing that you are. You'll go through life with your big brothers as guardian angels and an extended family of people that love you. I always encourage couples to do an engagement session because it's a great way to build a relationship with your photographer. This weekend when I shot Ken & Caroline's wedding they understood my style and fully trusted me. Poor things, they happily humored my "okay, oohhhh, can you sit for a second? Okay stand here. Ohhh, one more spot I promise. Okay, I lied. Snuggle here again?" They're love is genuine, relaxed and so, so beautiful. Congrats you two!

I loved how K & C were laughing the entire day. Often you see couples that are so nervous about things being perfect that they forget to enjoy the wedding! These two had NO problem just being themselves and keeping a wonderful attitude.

Yeah, I'm blogging the NIGHT OF the wedding. I couldn't wait. My kind, gracious, gorgeous step-sister Alisha (I hate that phrase, by the way...I prefer sister) married a wonderful, fantastic, loving man today. Did anyone hear some loud snuffling during the wedding? That was me sobbing at the vows while I simultaneously tried to focus the camera. R and I sat down during the reception meal and edited a few to show Alisha & Matt and now that they've viewed the slide show I can share a few. So here's a quick glance at their exciting day!

This was my first official session for Studio 5. I was already booked for this year but I accepted Emily & Josh's wedding as a trial to see how I'd like working for a studio and not solely by myself. LOVED it! We had such a fantastic time!

These two have a caring, refreshing relationship that required no portrait session coaching on how to interact. I'd say that they made my job easy but it always seems like a generic compliment. So we'll say this:
Emily and Josh...I look forward to your wedding because your love is pure, real and infectious. I loved diving into your engagement images and can't wait for you to see all of them.

I've been a naughty, naughty blogger lately. Until I reach mid-November, I have every weekend booked with a wedding or event.....so, yeah, things have been a little nuts in our house. Whitney's Bridal Shoot

This weekend I had the opportunity to shoot a bridal modeling session for Whitney Lowe. She's a fabulous make up artist and hair stylist in the Nashville area. I was able to sneak a picture of her during the session!

Shay and Mindy, our models, were so wonderful to work with....they made my job easy! Both had their hair and make up styled by Whitney prior to the shoot.

I made the long trek this weekend to South Carolina and it was well worth the trip. I had a great time meeting Johnette and James for the first time and despite the blistering heat everyone had a fantastic time. My assistant and I enjoyed hanging out with guests at a local pub afterward. God bless travel weddings where we have time to kill. =) I'm still wading through all of the images but here are a few examples that I know Johnette wanted to see!

Camp Phoenix

Last week I spent some time volunteering at Camp Phoenix in LaVergne, TN. This organization is run by the Tennessee Firefighter Burn Foundation and I can't say enough wonderful things about them. I won't share the images of the campers (for confidentiality reasons) but these are a few of the shots I took for their website. Laughter! I love it!

Danielle set aside a good bit of time so we could play around with different bridal ideas. This is why I love working with photographers.....when I asked Dani to go into a tick-infested field, she was only thinking about the resulting image.

One of my favorite touches to the wedding was that the bride borrowed a pair of boots from her grandfather.

Danielle didn't tell him that she wore them the entire wedding. When he asked at the reception, "So when am I going to get my boots back?", she lifted her dress to show him the boots. This was his reaction:

It's so beautiful to see couples that have a pure, knowing peace about them. Sort of like you're watching two people who are going on their first date but have known each other for years at the same time. I met Caroline and Ken on Vanderbilt's campus for a fantastic, laid-back engagement session.

And, well, I'm officially their photography slave since they bought me a delish shake from Ben & Jerry's. *drool*

While Randy and I were on vacation, we took some time out to shoot an engagement session for Elizabeth & Chad. Aside from being so sweet and goofy together (which I love), these two had a lot of fun ideas of where they wanted to take pictures. Little did I know that I would have to spend lots o' time photoshopping penises out of their images. And, no, I'm not kidding. Part of their session was shot at a "clothing optional" beach. =)

Ahhhhhh, the beach. I miss it already.

I had them frolicking through fields, wandering through a parking garage and I stopped traffic so they could run in the street. It's a BOY!

My darling friend, Courtney, found out that she's having a baby boy! We had planned on shooting her maternity pictures a little later in her pregnancy but she's having strong contractions already @ 34 weeks. Last week we scrambled to put together a quick session in case the little pumpkin shows up early.

The nursery isn't quite ready yet (nor is Courtney) but I wanted to shoot a few images of her in the room.

Jim and Courtney were married early last year in Florida on a gorgeous day. The morning after the wedding we walked out to the beach for a Day After/Trash The Dress session. There was an advisory out so no one was on the beach and the waves were STRONG. We had so much fun!

I love our mutt of a family. Between my husband and I we've had 12 step-siblings, 3 half-siblings, 1 full sibling and a partridge in a pear tree. Most wedding professionals will tell you that they DO NOT shoot family weddings or weddings for close friends. I understand all of the reasoning for that (TRUST ME, I do) but I can't imagine NOT giving that present of photography to my family. They're the reason I'm where I am today. This year I have 3 step-siblings getting married and I'll be shooting each and every one of those weddings. I was so thrilled to hear that my step-sister, Stacy, had met someone wonderful but I couldn't get over the shock of how grown up she looked!

This week Stacy surprised Reid with a trip to Evins Mill and I met them there for an engagement session. I felt like I should beat Reid up for kissing Stacy. I know, she's graduated from college now but she was barely a teen when I left for school. =) Only a few months to go until I'll see them again on the big day! These two are so in love. I can't describe how happy I am for her.

Phuong and Brian

Don't get me wrong, I love warm, sunny days and an amazing sunset BUT people often don't realize what rain can do for images. Colors are rich and saturated and clouds lead to soft, diffused light on drizzly days. I asked for Phuong and Brian to trust me with their wedding day and the images, as a result of that trust, turned out exactly as I had imagined. I was excited to get home and edit a few from their big day. First one from our meeting earlier this week:

We all trudged down a dirty ravine, with trash everywhere, to get these photos. I don't think the wedding guests understood WHY we were there but I loved the colors and textures.

It was freezing cold outside and drizzling most of the evening but looking at these two you would never know it. How sweet are they together??!?!

First of all, THANK YOU to everyone that helped put this gathering together. This little idea started when some photographer friends of mine wanted a girls weekend in Chicago and it snowballed into a full out workshop. I scheduled some adult models, Nikki contacted some child models and Kim dragged along her gorgeous sister who helped us out at the last minute. Also thank you to Shanell who helped us dress our models. I forgot how much I loved teaching and really enjoyed leading the shoots (even if I did come away with a respiratory infection).

Rachel and I met this weekend for her maternity session and I was hoping to shoot outside at The Factory. Sadly we were blasted with a torrential downpour and, while we waited for the clouds to lift, I captured a few images of them in the lobby of our new studio. This wonderful couple could not have had more perfect conditions for a February wedding. The sun was shining and the usually nasty winter wind was calm for once! Their fantastic wedding planner, Karyn Kaforey, kept the day running smoothly as well. Here's a little sampling from Laura & Jeff's big day:

Laura was such a wonderful sport with my suggestions, even when it meant hiking into the bathroom for a picture because I loved the colors and light. Jeff was just as trusting. I pulled him away from the reception for a few minutes to shoot in the Union Station bar.

In your lifetime I hope that you all find someone or something that inspires you. I met the most amazing group of photographers this week at the Jesh de Rox workshop and I came away with the feeling that I could fly. If you've been to one of these workshops you'll understand.

To those that attended, I can't say enough wonderful things about you. I only wish we could have been classmates longer. To Susan & Paige, thanks for sharing the "house car" with me and being so wonderfully embracing. And again thanks to Susan for listening to me decompress for 2 hours at the airport. You have no idea how much that helped me.
To Jesh, thank you. I tried to think of something eloquent or witty to say but I have so many emotions and thoughts swirling around right now. My prayer to you is that you continue to inspire, it truly is your calling.

My husband is so corny, I love him. When I opened my suitcase upon arrival, I found an "I Love You" puppy that he had packed.
